Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), this term has become  infamous especially amongst middle aged mothers who have young children or toddlers going to kindergarten, play school. I have come across many mothers in their late 30s who are obsessed by their child’s hyper irritability and over activity, and the frequent complaints they hear from the wards’ schools.  Of course, having sympathy about such mothers on one hand (because they ought to have the stamina and patience to control these over active children); I also want to put forth a word of caution that not all over/hyper activity can be termed as ADHD. This is where the parents as well as the school staff have to pay heed.

Clinically ADHD is characterized by inconsistent development coupled with chronic levels of inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity (scahill 2000Also the rates of ADHD is 3 times higher in boys than girls. Though there is strong evidence of genetic factors influencing the expression of ADHD, we cannot deny that psycho social, environmental and cultural factors also have a bearing on the same. There is no independent diagnostic tests for ADHD, thus leaving us to rely on clinical symptoms largely. As mentioned, short durations of hyperactivity, impulsivity by the child should not be thought of as ADHD by parents or teachers. Chronic and persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity severe than in an individual of same age and/or development (early development usually at the age of 6-7years is taken as criteria to diagnose ADHD), which cannot be associated by any other mental disorders)is classified as ADHD. There is elaborate literature on research studies pertaining to the diagnosis, classification, treatment with different modalities and prognosis.

It is unfortunate to know that a variable degree of stigma presents in parents about the acceptability of their child to be impaired by ADHD or hyperkinetic   disorder(terminology used internationally).  Never the less caution is must about false positive identification of ADHDs in pre-school kids. Initially much experience and time is required to be invested in the diagnosis and confirmation of ADHD. Then only we can think of treating it. Usually children with ADHD have pronounced impairments in their academics as well as socio-emotional development.

Similarly variety of treatment options exist for ADHD ranging from psycho stimulant drugs to mantra meditation, counselling, Yoga & Mindfulness based cognitive therapy. Complementary therapies like Yoga and Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and so on are among the top 10 therapies practiced in the west for treating children and adolescents. Yoga is an ancient Indian science which is the oldest preventive and wellness treatise known. The more popular Astanga Yoga of Patanjali Maharshi proposes 8 principles viz., Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. The latter four constituting the Antaranga Yoga serve as step-wise guide for practicing meditation.

The epidemiological prevalence of ADHD ranges from 1.7% to as high as 16% and the symptoms can evolve with age presenting as signs of increased motor activity in adolescents. The same can be passed on to adulthood who find it difficult to participate in any sedentary jobs. In general, for diagnostic purpose early presentation before the age of 6 and impairment due to symptoms at least in 2 settings like home and school is mandatory.

The treatment of ADHD can be considered under three sub sections: Parent or family focused strategies, child focused and school-based interventions. There is a paradigm shift in the attitudes of parents who opt for holistic and alternative forms of treatment individually or in adjunct to pharmacological therapies. Of these Yoga and meditation are important forms of holistic therapies which aim in healing ADHD by acting on all the above mentioned sub sections.

The Ashtanga yoga which is a time tested science helps to gradually bring the symptoms of ADHD under control, by creating awareness and insight in the child. The eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga progressing from the gross body to the subtle helps the practitioner to gain control over his/her body. This method comprises of postures/Asanas and antaranga yoga along with chanting of specific mantras provides remarkable effects in reducing the hyper activity and improving the attention span in ADHD children.

The prime symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity, impulsivity, acting before thinking, impatience, restlessness leading to poor organizational skills making the child look clumsy; tax the nervous system of the child. Mind is usually equated to monkey due to its inborn tendency to wander. This normal tendency of mind is more pronounced in ADHD children. Yoga advocates that mind and prana are intricately linked and on controlling the prana, mind will relax by itself. This is evident from the verse 2, chapter 2 of Hatha yoga pradipika which states:

Chale vaate chalam chittam nischale nischalam bhaveth I

Yogi stanutvamaapnoti tato vayum nirodhayeth II

This means when prana moves the mental force/chitta also moves; when prana is without movement, chitta is also without movement. By this (Pranayama) the yogi(practitioner) attains steadiness and can restrain vayu. According to sage Patanjali, renowned as the Father of yoga, pranayama is the practice of controlled inspiration and expiration, ought to be practsed as per the instructions of the Guru. With regular practice as per instructions, balance and control over prana is established which helps in curtailing of mental agitation.

Bhagavadgita, popular hindu scripture quotes “Yogah karmasu kaushalam” which proves the fact that Yoga is the science of skill full action. The process is relaxed awareness and outcome being effectiveness which is helpful to treat the symptoms and heal the child internally. Often the child diagnosed of ADHD has difficulty in learning at school though they mostly have average or above average intelligence leading to lower self-confidence and self-esteem. Also it is seen that the parents being anxious about the performance of the child put pressure to improve their grades and performance by various means. The parents have to understand that development is a gradual process and any therapy which is a science cannot be deemed as a quick fix. Yoga helps to gain control of the body, balance the vital energy (prana) and calm the mind with internal awareness.

Meditation is said to have originated in India about 3000 years ago and has proved to be considerably effective in ADHD and many other psychological conditions. According to Davis (1998) Meditation is a set of attentional practices leading to an altered state or trait of consciousness characterized by expanded awareness and integrated self.  There are different meditation types viz., Insight meditation, Mindfulness meditation, Vipasana, Qigong, Anapanasathi, Zen, Chun Do Sup Bup.

Anciently meditation has been associated with religious and spiritual terms. This provides the foundation for their evolution and development. Practically this should not deter modern day application by compartmentalizing and restricting its usage to specific sects or groups. It is a time tested developed knowledge which had been proved to be effective, as explained in ancient Yogic treatises. However, modern day organizations are using less spiritual and mystic terms in imparting this magnificent knowledge for the benefit of humanity globally.

The modern meditational methods like Concentrative meditation which includes Transcendental meditation and Relaxation response widely  practiced in the west as well as the Mindfulness meditation which emphasizes on opening awareness of the individual to the emerging contents of the mind; all are based on the principles of Yoga. The Dharana(Focusing), Dhyana(De-focusing meditation) and Samadhi(super-consciousness) similar to transcending consciousness have been propounded thousands of years ago. The wandering mind which in its grossest form preoccupied by random thoughts is brought to concentration by focusing on objects, colours, light or pleasant ideas is then focused in Dharana; after much practice it can ascend to Dhyana which is the actual meditation state, akin to mindfulness state where mind is trained to decondition its previous patterns of reaction to different forms of stimuli. As one attains this state and can sustain here for prolonged durations he can progress to the final eighth limb of Ashtanga yoga, Samadhi state analogous to Transcendentalism.

Yoga being the union of two poles of energy within an individual; aims at balancing and achieving homeostasis by Union rather than partition. Just as excess fat accumulates and blocks blood flow in the vessels, so does impurities from wrong life style clog the flow of energy/prana in the nadis which result in decreased energy manifestations. Yoga tries to make changes in the subtle energy field at pranic levels, so as to correct the gross manifestations in the body as ailments. Influxes of the mind can be controlled by pranic restraint and vice versa has been verified centuries ago. We have to only practice these deep-rooted strategies with immaculate faith to attain disease free, healthier, and blissful lives.

However, attention is to be taken in practicing this under strict observance of instructions by the Guru, failing which there is risk of release of kundalini energy in the blocked nadis leading to adverse effects.

Statistics from WHO are staggering, nearly 350 million people around the world are depressed. 350 MILLION!! That’s nearly 5% of the world’s population. The statistics are much worse when it comes to women, 1 in every 8 woman is suffering from depression or would develop clinical depression in her lifetime. We lose nearly 800000 people to suicides due to depression every year. If these statistics does not jolt you awake then nothing will.

Jessica, aged 32 is a high powered executive, has always been a high achiever. She graduated with top honors in both school and college. She has very high standards for herself and can be very self-critical when she fails to meet them. She is slowly but surely breaking the glass ceiling in the otherwise male dominated company. At home, she is mother to two adorable girls aged 8 and 6 who are mirrors of their mum. Her husband is the city’s leading lawyers and their love story is the envy of the town. Her in-laws adore her and she is the apple of her parent’s eye. Jessica’s life is perfect and envious.

Not everything is as it seems. If you look closely you observe that the once ever smiling Jessica does not smile a lot, she has dark circles around her eyes. She, since a few months has not been able to concentrate on work and hence the company is on the verge of losing a major account. She gets irritated by her children quiet often and yesterday had slapped the elder one. Her in-laws too observe her lack of attention to them. Jessica’s husband has noticed changes as well. She’s shown little interest in sex and has had difficulties falling asleep at night. So, what is happening to Jessica???

We are bombarded with images of superwomen wherever we see, be it movies or television. Advertisements with women who not only take care of house and family but are also the perfect career women. Such visuals look great in reel life but reality is different.  Women are constantly pressurized to do it all, if they are stay at home moms taking care of their families; they are constantly taunted for lacking ambition and if women are career oriented they are pressurized into settling down and starting a family. This puts paramount pressure on a woman and under this kind of stress even the high and mighty crumble.

Jessica was slowly failing to meet the impossibly high standard that she herself and the society put on her. She was slowly loosing the delicate balance between family and work. She felt that she was not giving time to her children and was constantly reminded about it. The final nail was when Jessica’s younger daughter fell ill, the “mommy please, don’t go to office, I need you here” became her undoing. Jessica had to attend office as she had an important meeting. Though she came early that day, the feeling of not being there when needed began to eat her up. She began to get depressed; she started to suffer from low self esteem and insomnia. Consequently her job began to suffer which gave rise to more problems and she started undervaluing herself. The usually upbeat Jessica would hardly smile she would be irritable and withdrawn. Jessica was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.Jessicas husband accidentally happened to spot her researching on the web the ways to commit suicide. This was the final straw, her husband and family intervened and immediately sought medical intervention. Jessica was diagnosed as being clinically depressed.  Six months on, she is better. She was immediately put on medications. Jessica still visits her psychiatrist once a week.

Jessica’s story isn’t unique; if we look closely we will find Jessica in every corner. Women due to their anatomy are predisposed to depression. The hormonal changes that happen every month makes us especially vulnerable. The need of the hour is to talk about it, to communicate, to express ourselves. But we are busy hiding it. Mental illness like depression should not be brushed under the carpet, it has to be addressed. But there is hope. We are changing. Celebrities like Deepika Padukone have come out in the open about them combating depression; this has given the average woman more power to speak up. Also, we women have to stop pressuring ourselves into being perfect at all times. Sometimes it’s OK to let go and Breathe.

The Dreaded “D” Word

Imagine yourself being trapped in a room where the only voice you hear, constantly screams at you saying how hopeless, helpless and unworthy you are. The voice possesses such confidence that it is impossible for you to ignore it. Imagine your entire life without color, just shades of Black and Grey, while this voice is constantly trying to convince you that life isn’t worth living.

Imagine you trying very hard to fight it but it finds more and improved ways to attack you. This is DEPRESSION. Depression is that dark cloud that convinces you how bad things are and no matter how hard you fight it, it defeats you, it wears you down.

Depression – decoded

It is human nature to feel down sometimes. To feel as though nothing’s going your way, a sense of gloom like a dark rainy day surrounds you, the world seems dull, everything makes you sad, but we mostly snap out of it within a day or two and the world seems bright and colorful as it should be.

But imagine feeling this gloom all the time, every single day. Forcing yourself to do things that brought you so much enjoyment earlier. Mundane things like getting out of bed is a humungous effort.

Depression is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain hence difficult to predict the trigger element. One moment you are happy and having fun and the very next minute you feel your whole world crumbling. You desperately are crying for help.

Don’t worry: Depression can be treated

Your loved ones book an appointment with a psychiatrist, but why a psychiatrist??? Am I mad?? Will I be locked away in the mad house like the people we see in the movies??

The doctor is kind and say he just wants to talk, speaks to you about the changes in you. He wants you to relax and communicate with him. He asks you some questions which are easy to answer. It is before several of these sittings with a psychiatrist that you are diagnosed with having Clinical Depression.  A bunch of tests are ordered to test your physiological well being.  The kind doctor recommends antidepressants and counseling.

Amongst the many people you meet, you are most influenced by a woman called Kanta. She was a share broker before depression which ruined her career and her relationships. She always recommends her therapist named Sanjana, who helped her in recovering from depression. Kanta talks about how taking too many antidepressants are dangerous in the long run.

Anti-depressants

It’s a known fact that long term usage of antidepressants is associated with seizures and other heart rhythm abnormalities. Also, many patients suffer from a phenomenon called the “Prozac Pop Out” wherein initially the patients respond well to treatment but as time passes they see a return of symptoms even though they are on full term medication. Risk of Type 2 diabetes is increased with the use of antidepressant medication.

Natural Ways of beating depression

 Success Stories:

Lets read about two women who though apparently had everything going for them, were still diagonised with depression

The depression fighters emerge, who treat and who get treated

Sanjana: the corporate challenger

Sanjana is a practitioner of alternative therapies and has worked on integrative therapies to treat depression.

Sanjana was once diagnosed as being Clinically Depressed. A high-ranking officer in the corporate world, Sanjana’s life was picture perfect. She had it all, intelligence, beauty, doting and encouraging parents. Though she worked as a techie, her main passion in life was writing. She loved to weave magic through her writing. But lately, Sanjana’s pretty smile seem to be strained.

There was darkness beneath her eyes suggesting lack of sleep, the spark in her eyes were missing. Sanjana herself had no clue as to what was wrong with her, she felt lost.

The mood swings had started to take a toll on her work as well as family life. The final straw was when Sanjana felt burdened while indulging in her favorite hobby –writing.  Writing had always brought her so much joy and happiness was now nothing but a burden. This scared her and she decided to seek professional help.

Sanjana was diagnosed with Depression. This was a jolt out of the blue but since Sanjana was a strong girl she decided to take control of her life. She started the long journey of self-help and healing. The first step was to let go the stress of the corporate world. She quit her job. She discovered the benefits of meditation and Reiki to heal herself.

Sanjana is cured of depression now. Not only has she started writing but has also found a new passion in painting. It helps her calm down and gives her inner peace. She has become an energy healer who now helps others who are in a similar situation as her.

Kanta: the Braveheart

Kanta’s story starts from her childhood. She came from a broken home. Her mother was abandoned by her father when Kanta was a little girl. Kanta was bullied throughout her school and college. This had a very big impact on her psyche. She hated her life and blamed her father for all the troubles that she went through.

Despite all of this happening to her, Kanta was an exceptionally good student; she passed with flying colors and was immediately offered a high-powered job in a reputed Trading Company. Kanta kept climbing the corporate ladder but with it came a great deal of stress and pressure. Slowly signs of depression began to show up in Kanta. Loss of appetite, weight loss, a sense of gloom, extreme fatigue – she started to be withdrawn and unsociable. The situation got so worse that she even attempted suicide but was thankfully saved at the last minute by her fiancé. She was diagnosed with major depression.

Kanta started to take therapy from Sanjana. Within a couple of sessions, Sanjana could find out that the root cause of her depression was the pent-up anger and grief that she suffered due to her father’s abandonment.

Kanta was taught how to deal with her anger issues through Counselling, Reiki and Yoga. This helped her get the passion back in her life and helped forgive her father so that she can move on with her life.

Depression for Adam or Eve?

Depression strikes both men and women equally hard. Although studies have shown that women are more prone to depression than men.

Women while depressed tend to rehash negative feelings from long ago, this leads to negative self talk, crying for no reason and blaming one self. Whereas men tend to distract themselves when depressed. This helps ease the depression. Men tend to substance abuse such as drinking, gambling, and engaging in reckless behavior prior to the onset of depression whereas women tend to indulge in such behavior after the onset of depression especially when anxiety levels increase.

Women are more likely to get depressed in response to stressful situations; they also tend to respond in such a way that prolongs their feelings of stress more so than men.

Depression is more common than we think, but not untreatable as many of us perceive. Nor are antidepressants the only solution.

Take our depression test to check the likelihood of you having any of the symptoms or encourage those around you to  take it. Prevention is always better than cure.

When exams are around the corner, children and parents both come under stress. Exhaustive study requirements, improper planning and pressure from parents cause physical and mental problems in children. One should make a timetable and plan the study pattern. Parents should encourage the child and plan for a healthy diet and lifestyle to prevent the stress.

Dos for physical and mental health

Using food made up of whole grains at home with lots of fruits and vegetables is highly recommended. During the exams, stress will be high and a lack of exercise may lead to improper weight gain. The above pattern will help in maintaining health.

According to Ayurveda consumption of ghee with food will help in the nourishment of brain. Dry fruits like almond and walnut etc can be consumed as snacks which will help lubricate the body naturally.

To keep the child hydrated, parents should give fresh fruit juice, green tea, tender coconut, sugarcane juice as well as churned and butter extracted buttermilk. Ayurveda says that the buttermilk helps in digestion and controls excessive heat.

To keep the mind relaxed and to improve concentration, parents should be supportive and they should be relaxed in front of the child.

In between the studies, students should take small breaks of ten minutes or so and involve themselves with some other activities like listening to soothing music, reading something entertaining, dancing or indulging in any other hobbies they have. This activity makes the mind relax and improves concentration.

During evening playing shuttle badminton or some outdoor game will help in staying fit, physically and mentally. The entire family can involve themselves in indoor games like chess, monopoly etc.  to build a congenial atmosphere.

Waking up early in the morning can also help in improving the concentration. Ayurveda highly recommends studying during the Brahmi Muhurta during which, the mind is fresh and can absorb the knowledge imparted quickly.

To get good sleep, one can undergo head and body massage once a week and only head massage and bath at least twice a week. Abhyanga or massages can improve both physical and mental health according to Ayurveda.

Don’ts for physical and health

One should reduce junk food, outside foods and deep fried items. Due to stress during exam, the metabolism (digestion and absorption) will not be proper. These foods will lead to indigestion or obesity.

One should not consume soft drinks, carbonated drinks and tea or coffee in excessive quantity.

Putting pressure on the child or always talking about the studies will increase the stress on the child.

Studying for exams should not disturb the sleep; erratic sleep pattern will affect the health. Sitting idle in one place for long duration is not advisable.

These are the few simple tips to follow during exam times. These will help to maintain both physical and mental health as well as keep the child relaxed during the study holidays.

What is depression?

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistently low mood and a feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression is a persistent problem, not a passing one – the average length of a depressive episode is 6 to 8 months.

It is different from the fluctuations in mood that people experience as a part of normal life. Temporary emotional responses to the challenges of everyday life do not constitute depression. Likewise, even the feeling of grief resulting from the death of someone close is not itself depression if it does not persist. There are several mental ailments that can be effectively treated with yoga and depression is one of them. In fact, now-a-days yoga for depression is widely used as an alternative therapy.

Causes of depression

The causes of depression are not fully understood and is likely to be due to a complex combination of factors that include:

Some people are at higher risk of depression than others; wherein the risk factors include:

Life events – including bereavement, divorce, work issues, relationships with friends and family, financial problems, medical concerns, or acute stress.

Personality – those with less successful coping strategies, or previous life trauma.

Genetic factors – first-degree relatives of depressed patients are at higher risk.

Childhood trauma.

Some prescription drugs – including corticosteroids, some beta-blockers, and other prescription drugs.

A past head injury.

People who have had an episode of major depression are at higher risk of a subsequent one.

Chronic pain syndromes in particular, but also other chronic conditions, such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of depression

How can Yoga help in Depression?

As per our yoga practitioner

Yoga is a physical exercise that involves different body poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. Yoga for anxiety and depression helps with symptoms, such as improving energy levels, pain tolerance and self esteem and reduces stress, anxiety and depression.

Yoga for depression is a set of yoga’s which control the mind, since trying to control the mind directly is impossible, we need gross physical and breathing techniques.

The technique is to start with loosening exercises which are body movements repeated with jerks and speed. This helps initially to distract the mind from the loop of repeated thoughts. Once it is distracted by fast body movements you go on to slower body movements like surya namaskar and asanas. Similarly, one can start with fast breathing practices like Kapalabatti and then move on to slower breathing practices like Pranayama.

After alternating between a set of fast and slow body and breathing practices for about 20-30 minutes, the mind is pulled out of its loop of worrying thoughts. Now it can be set into further slowing down by Nadanusandhana, and then to actual meditation, which is nothing but a very slow effortless flow of single thought in the mind sinking down into total inner silence for a few seconds.

Women physiology is curiously complex. This is because it is dynamic and changes with different phases of her life. Women have to undergo physiological stresses in addition to environmental ones affecting men and women and all other creatures. Certain conditions like menstruation, pregnancy, abortions or menopause all are instances of physiological stresses as they put more pressure on her energy demands, calorie intake, vital readings, micro nutrient uptake etc.

We have options wherein we don’t have to live with the issues which we deem to have become a normal part of our monthly cycles. In Fact  reiki for irregular periods can help women to deal with monthly changes they go through.

Menstruation which heralds the fertile life of a female, is to be dealt carefully. Many teenage girls experience psychological and physical problems during menstrual beginning. This is a  new phase and in this phase the girl may feel discomfort with the engorgement of breasts, pain in the breasts and lower back, puffiness of face and hot flashes.

This is a new feeling and hence lays psychological stress on her mind. Some girls also experience premenstrual syndrome which presents symptomatically as rise in temperature, fullness in breasts and pain over the nipple and areola, puffiness of face and pimples, swelling in the legs, pain in the lower back, calf and inguinal regions, craving for chocolates, spicy food, headaches, constipation, acute episodes of depression and so on.

Experiencing all of these symptoms or any one or in sets, at the onset of monthly periods is mentally taxing and physically exhausting as well. Many students and teenagers complain of irregularities in their monthly cycle. Usually this cycle is of 24-28 days but it's very rare that all women experience monthly periods at exactly a months’ period or completion of 28 days. The cycle varies with individual women and also the symptoms are subjective depending on the physiology and hormonal balance.

The girl with menstrual irregularities may face a variety of symptoms like excessive body hair growth, androgenic features, pimples, stunted uterine development, improper growth of secondary sexual characters. All these may at later stage lead to infertility, PCOS, thyroid and other hormonal disorders. In addition this may harm the self image of the female itself, which is depressive.

Reiki for irregular periods, as a healing therapy has proved to be a successful treatment by itself,  as well as when integrated with other  therapies. Clinically menstrual irregularities are amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, menorrhagia, which are no bleeding, scanty flow and excessive flow respectively. As a Reiki healer, we need to recognise the cause and form of irregularity and channelize the energy in the problem area.

We once had a teenage client  who suffered from oligomenorrhea, scanty blood flow since her menstruation. Also she used to get her periods once in 2 or 3 months and had visited a couple of doctors.  Her mother was a staunch follower of Indian systems of medicine and was reluctant to undergo any form of allopathic remedy. On examining the girl the reiki healer could see that she had associated secondary problems of excessive hairiness and improper breast growth too. She started with daily sessions of reiki for an irregular period of an hour each for a month and told the mother to review her  menstrual cycle. Along with reiki for menstrual cramps she was also  suggested certain naturopathic food restrictions and dietary changes.

After 15 days when the girl had her 20 days of the cycle completed she was started with oil massage and fomentations over the lower abdominal region  The result being she got her periods on the 31st day and later we  reduced her reiki sittings for period pains to ¾ hour and gradually tapered the reiki and naturopathic remedies by the end of the 3 months period. However, we continued to give distant reiki healing for women to the girl on the request of the mother every month from her 21st day until she got her periods for the next 6 months until she regularly got her periods. During this phase we could evidently see the difference in her breast size as well and by the end of 6 months her facial hair had also considerably reduced.

The stimulation of the pituitary gland by channelizing reiki energy and in turn flow of vital energy to the parts of the uterus help in solving menstrual abnormalities of amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea. However the duration and frequency of the reiki sittings for irregular periods depends on individual conditions.
