Client Story: Diabetic Retinopathy

Mr. Srinivas in his early 60’s has been diabetic for the past 20 years. Around 5 years back his vision started blurring.  He consulted an ophthalmologist and he was diagnosed with Macular Edema. It develops when blood vessels in the retina start leaking fluids and it results in vision loss. Macular edema is often a complication of diabetic retinopathy, and is the most common form of vision loss for people with diabetes, particularly if left untreated.

Even after undergoing two laser treatments, his vision remained blurred.  He was informed that medically the only thing to do is undergo laser treatment whenever the blood vessels are swollen. But in the long term he has to prepare himself for a total loss of vision.

Not finding a satisfactory solution in allopathy, Srinivas opted for Ayurveda. He underwent a 21 day residential program in an Ayurveda hospital, which helped reduce his endema microns from 400 to 250 (normal range is 140-200). His vision became better and he was able to get back his life. He started driving, reading books, going out, managing things in office, etc.

A couple of months back, in Jan 2016 his vision started blurring again. He went back to allopathy and was recommended to take an injection IVT. Post the injection, for 2 to 3 weeks his vision improved, but slowly it started blurring again till he could hardly see anything. Due to the injection, his retina was damaged and eye pressure increased leading to secondary glaucoma. He was then recommended surgery to correct the retina damage. Totally at a loss and not wanting to go for another surgery, he went back to Ayurveda, which helped ease his eye pressure.

In the meantime, a relative recommended acupuncture for his damaged retina. At his wits end with his deteriorating vision and impacting the daily functioning of his life, he decided to explore acupuncture. He got in touch with Dr Gurudutta, an experienced acupuncturist.

On his recommendation Srinivas, underwent acupuncture treatment for 3 months, with regular sessions with Dr Gurudutta. At the end of which the physical shape of his eye is fairly back in shape and retina damage repaired. His edema is also in normal range now, and vision fairly good.

As Mr Srinivas puts it, “I can live with not having a perfect 6 by 6 vision. A combination of Ayurveda and Acupuncture saved my eyes and gave me back my life.”
